Observation of the gunas in the world around us – tamas

Not only do the gunas permeate the natural world, they permeate the objects and activities all around us. It may be noticed in the way someone walks, the quality of a meal, attitudes to a task, and people’s interactions with one another.

Be aware of the positive and negative aspects of tamas. Different facets may include dullness and inertia, entropy, laziness, depression, resistance, negativity, decay, and an inability to lift out of the destructive mire of life. On the other hand, stability, steadiness and strength may also be seen as aspects of tamas once it is interacting harmoniously with the other gunas. From another perspective the destruction of the old and broken, related to tamas, clears the way for new possibilities.

Look impartially at the evidence of tamas in the world. Look around, not within. Observe the play of tamas in nature, in the human environment, and in the behaviour of others.
